Maran farm house

Location : Pattanur, Tamil Nadu

Year of completion : 2019

Project Area : 84 Sq m (900 Sq ft)

Away from the hustle and bustle of the city, amidst the dense variety of trees stands the hand sculpted Maran farm house. Curated with precise thought given to using locally sourced materials and traditional construction techniques of Tamil Nadu, the farm house is an attempt to promote a simpler way of living. Built using a rubble trench foundation, with cob and adobe walls the house consists of two floors with two bedrooms, living room, kitchen on the ground floor and terrace on the first floor looking out to the farm. A simple and efficient programme that connects back to the roots of Tamil Nadu through earthen architecture. The outside exterior walls are painted with a Surkhi Lime plaster and the interior walls with mud plaster. As you enter, you are welcomed by the cool breeze and change in temperature from the outside created by the jali walls, which also create a constant drama through its changing sceneries of the flowing natural light. One will not be able to take their eyes away from the cascading spiral staircase made of timber and coconut coir ropes almost as if a tree emerged from the ground below. The carefully thought madras terrace flat slab creates an interesting, eye catching pattern that one would only notice in traditional houses. Walking along these walls, creates a sense of nostalgia that takes the viewer back in time. From when you step in through the thinnai (raised seating) to enter into the living room all these elements come together to create the warmth of a home. With a combination of architecture and sculpture, Maran farm house was an experiment that paid utmost importance to traditional techniques respecting its context and nature.
